For those of us whose winter glow ideas don't involve flying to tropical resorts, we have a joyful task of adjusting our skin care and makeup for dry, cold, sharp air and punishing, even drier indoors Heating (fun). Flake, dry, irritated skin seems to be the norm every winter, but it still looks lovely. Fortunately, there are cosmetics. It just needs some tweaking to keep it from betraying us by drawing attention to winter-ravaged skin. Dare we dew? We are. We enlisted the expertise of professional makeup artists to show us how to use makeup to look like an ethereal glowing angel in harsh winters (none of which involve bronzers).

1. Don't skimp on moisturizers.

Okay, this is technically a skincare trick, but it actually helps to think of it as a step in your makeup routine because it's the best way to get a dewy, glowing complexion before you even consider highlighter . "Spend extra time massaging [moisturizers] to enhance your skin's natural glow," says makeup artist Nick Barros. "Be generous and don't forget your neck." Need a good moisturizer? We've reviewed these Best of Beauty winners, or you can try any of them.

2. Know when to moisturize.

Moisturizing is obviously crucial, but Washington, D.C.-based makeup artist Erwin Gomez shares an extra tip: Always moisturize while your skin is still damp after a shower. "This is the perfect time to provide best beauty products to skin," says Gomez. He opts for products like Fresh's Vitamin Nectar Glow Juice Antioxidant Facial Serum, which contains vitamins C and E for added radiance.

3. Stay away from anything too powdery.

"Powder can make fair skin look duller," says Barros. Instead, he recommends using a moisturizing CC cream one shade warmer than your skin tone. "I'm a fan of Giorgio Armani Beauty Luminessence CC Color Control Brighten Moisturizer SPF 35 because it contains a subtle reflective pigment," he says. Another great option that includes sun protection is Supergoop's CC Cream Daily Correct Broad Spectrum SPF 35 Sunscreen.

4. Change your primer.

Gomez recommends using a luminous primer instead of a traditional matte primer. "The subtle shimmer in the primer will help give your skin an amazing inside-out glow," says Gomez. We'll get any extra brilliance due to winter winds to worry about. (Plus, the primer adds another layer of hydration.) Try the Glass Skin Hero VDL Lumilayer Primer, Flesh Beauty's Illuminating Primer, or Laura Mercier's Radiance Foundation Primer.

5. Stick to liquid and cream foundations…

The only thing worse than flaky is when your foundation actually accentuates your flaky skin. Gomez recommends a cream-based foundation, which glides smoothly on the skin. We recommend any of these 17 foundations for dry, thirsty skin. In contrast, "matte formulas can settle into flakes and dry skin, giving you a patchy and uneven finish." If you don't like your foundation being too dewy, you can always top it off and let your The T-zone area is radiant.

6. ...and liquid highlighters.

For the most natural-looking results, Barose recommends applying the liquid highlighter with a damp Beautyblender sponge. On his celebrity clients, he typically uses Giorgio Armani Beauty Fluid Sheer, a warm nude that brightens the complexion without drying like a powder highlighter. You can also try the Best of Beauty award-winning Nyx Away We Glow Liquid Highlighter, L'Oreal Paris' True Match Lumi Glotion, or Kevyn Aucoin's Glass Glow Face.

7. Never stop moisturizing.

If you find that your skin is getting dry throughout the day (or your makeup is sticky), keep a facial spray nearby for a dose of hydration. "Spray your face with a light mist of water to help set makeup and provide a little extra moisture," says Gomez. Any of these facial sprays will do the job.
