Grand Seiko adds 3 sports watches to Evolution 9 collection
Recently, Grand Seiko launched a new collection called "Evolution 9" inspired by the iconic 44GS, the brand's first watch launched in 1964. So far, the Evolution 9 has featured the likes of the SLGA009, AKA "White Birch" and the striking SLGA007, but now Grand Seiko is adding five sports watches to the Watches Wonders 2022 collection. With two GMTs, two chronographs and a diver, the Evolution 9 series grew to include a wide range of sports watches all powered by Spring Drive movements.
I know many of you won't be familiar with the basics of the Evolution 9 series, so here are nine design elements: a multi-faceted case finished surface made of a flat upper surface with a hairline finish and a non-distorting flat mirror; the case's Curved side profile; double or greater width indexes at 12 o'clock; flat dial; faceted minute hand that extends to the minute track, with hour hand shaped distinct from minute hand; indexes all have deep central grooves; low center of gravity case ; Bracelet is stable and of moderate thickness; Bracelet width is at least half the diameter of the case.

In short, these principles amount to wider lugs, higher quality bracelets, perfectly balanced case weights, and improved indexing/readability.
So, to the new section. The two Spring Drive GMT parts are the SBGE283 with a black dial and the SBGE285 with a textured light grey dial. Both come with a high-strength titanium case and bracelet, and are water-resistant to 100m. The case is 41mm wide and 13.9mm thick, and you'll notice the curves on the sides of the case make it easier to wear. Obviously, anything to do with comfort and wearing experience has to be judged when wearing a metal watch, so I'll tell you how that goes in my hands-on later. Another interesting addition to Spring Drive GMT is the addition of a new font on the bezel. Equipped with Spring Drive GMT 9R66, it is accurate to +/-15 seconds per month and has a 72-hour power reserve.
There are two new Grand Seiko Spring Drive chronographs, one of which is a 15th anniversary limited edition. The SBGC249 is a limited edition with a blue dial and bezel, but it's not just aesthetics that differentiate it. This model uses the Spring Drive Chronograph GMT 9R96, which is accurate to +/- 10 seconds per month and has a 72-hour power reserve. The non-limited edition SBGC251 features a black dial with a black bezel, slightly different from the 9R86, accurate to +/- 15 seconds per month, and a 72-hour power reserve.
Aside from the color and movement, both pieces use the same titanium case and bracelet. The case is 45.3mm wide, 15.8mm thick and water resistant to 100m.
Finally, the new SLGA015 200m diver’s watch features a new black textured dial inspired by the Kuroshio aka Kuroshio. This is probably one of these new Evolution 9 watches I'm most looking forward to seeing in person, and I have a feeling I'm not the only one. Of all titanium, the SLGA015's case is 43.8mm wide and 13.8mm thick. Inside is the Spring Drive 5 Days Calibre 9RA5 with +/-10 seconds of monthly accuracy and a 5-day power reserve.
